About Distell

Distell is a proudly South African international company that builds and manages several authentic African alcohol brands. Much like The Knowledge Trust, Distell has strong ethical values and endeavours in sustainable development through the Distell Foundation. The Distell Foundation’s impact lies in solving societal issues that affect the communities of Stellenbosch in the Western Cape.

The Situation

The Distell Cape Town office based in Durbanville found themselves needing 10 young and bright minds who could take a dynamic leadership opportunity and run with it! The opportunity was a 12 month tenure where candidates would be gaining experience and skills in management. The candidates would be spending one month in the Durbanville offices where they would receive training and thereafter serve the remaining 11 months of their contract working from home.

The catch was that The Knowledge Trust then had to source, screen and interview candidates in just 4 days from the sign-off day which fell on a friday. In our essence of always going above and beyond, The Knowledge Trust was able to consult on the needs of our candidates by negotiating a transport stipend for our candidates and of course Distell obliged because of how strongly they feel about supporting their talent. 

Special Ingredient

For an energetic and fast-paced organisation such as Distell, it was important that they are able to not only hire quickly but to hire the right people quickly. Our WhatsApp applications and interviews process entailed just that. Candidates were able to apply for the opportunity just 2 hours post the sign-off meeting for the campaign to go live. There, the candidates can complete their applications, send their documents and shortlisted candidates are interviewed via voice notes. Voice Notes are an incredible tool for employers to be able to assess the communication abilities of their candidates as well as the energy, ambition and drive that they bring to the team. In roles like the one Distell was offering where candidates would be trained for management, their communication and presentation skills were extremely important.

The Task

The candidate brief was as follows: 
  • Number of candidates: 10
  • Location: Western Cape
  • Qualification: At least a matric
  • Matric Average: At least 60%
  • Screening criteria: Must have a passion for brand communications, 1 year experience
  • Age: Under 30 years of age
  • Ethnicity: All races
  • Employment status: Currently unemployed and not studying
  • Growth mindset: At least 80%
  • Numeracy test: At least 100%
  • Added Benefits: Laptop, 2 Monitor screens and mobile data to work from home, R800 transport stipend for the first month
  • Professional Communication: 80%
  • Available for interviews: Within 4 days
  • Available to start: 3 May 2021
  • Stipend: R7000

The Action

At the time of this campaign, The Knowledge Trust had grown to almost 210 000 highly engaged members.The campaign strategy to find a suitable candidate was as follows:

  1. Access the existing community via the weekly Saturday newsletter which our members interact with regularly, as well as social media.
  2. WhatsApp applications and interviews
  3. Send targeted emails to members that have applied for similar opportunities
  4. Utilize our Bounty Hunter Referral program.

The campaign for the General Management learnership resulted in 65,411 opportunity views, 1,904 qualified applications, 204 shortlisted candidates, 3888 interviewed via WhatsApp and 10 lives changed! We added 10 more real people to our toll of over 600 success stories in 2021 alone!
