About HyperionDev

HyperionDev is Southern Africa’s largest edu-tech provider. The organisation was founded in 2012, as a small grassroots movement of computer science students working towards a single goal: to build and deliver better technical education for anyone who wanted to learn digital literacy and programming skills.

Hyperion focuses on empowering beginner coders and providing developers with a community of developers along with feedback from experts and mentors. Continuing this philosophy of empowering aspiring coders within communities, HyperionDev decided to join the #FundaFriday campaign in the hopes of inspiring a love for coding in three lucky bursary recipients.

The Situation

At the time of the campaign, our goal was to give away 12 weeks worth of bursaries to qualified applicants through our #FundaFriday bursary campaign. HyperionDev also wanted to amplify the engagement with their online coding boot camp amongst the youth and generate leads for their future programmes. We then formed a partnership as we held the same values of development and community.

Special Ingredient

Young people interested in developing and coding often have high problem-solving aptitudes, as a result, this was the most important quality to screen in applicants. Members were therefore offered a gamified coding experience. Gamified experiences highlight candidates who are goal-oriented, who are driven by a high sense of power and who are motivated by membership and belonging. These are all values that signalled high-quality coders to HyperionDev.

This profile also increases the likelihood that these candidates will succeed in the coding boot camps and make them potential students in more boot camps.

The Task

The candidate brief was as follows:
  • Number of candidates: 2
  • Location: Online/Remote
  • Qualification: Full Stack Web Development, Data Science or Software Engineering either part-time or full-time
  • Employment status: Unemployed and currently not studying
  • Professional communication: 80%
  • Growth Mindset: 80%
  • Available for interviews: Immediately
  • Available to start: January 2021

The Action

The trusted Knowledge Trust community had grown to almost 130 000 members who were fully engaged with our platform and excited by the possible bursary giveaways in the bursary lottery.
