Much like The Knowledge Trust, TotalStay is creating a future that is reducing barriers! In their own way. TotalStay is an innovative organisation creating a better way for travelers to stay combining the luxuries of hotel living with the flexibility of DIY stay. Everyday, travelers’ needs are changing and their appreciation for hotel luxuries mixed with the comfort of home is appreciating. TotalStay is a big fan of collaboration and does this with other hotel booking sites to deliver their vision.

The Situation

As a long term partner of The Knowledge Trust, TotalStay needed to grow and as such, contacted The Knowledge Trust to facilitate the process through our new WhatsApp applications process. The travel organisation was looking for two night receptionists and two front desk concierges to represent their hotels. They were hoping to bring in fresh, young and spunk people to showcase their innovative energy!

Special Ingredient

To represent this vibrant energy, TotalStay needed to hear just how articulate and confident the candidates who hoped to represent them were. This is where WhatsApp job applications played a valuable role in receiving applications, documents and voice notes that helped represent a more complete profile of candidates. This allowed TotalStay to save time in interviewing candidates who only look good on paper and not in person. WhatsApp interviews also allowed TotalStay to increase the accuracy in their hiring process based on the amount of social proof they received from candidates. This process resulted in TotalStay receiving over 4000 applications and shortlisting them to 26 and 27 candidates each. The cream of the crop 8 were interviewed via seamless, asynchronous WhatsApp interviews and 4 energetic young voices were onboarded!

The Task

The candidate brief was as follows: 
  • Number of candidates: 4
  • Location: Western Cape
  • Qualification: At least a matric
  • Matric Average: At least 60%
  • Screening criteria: Must be in the hospitality industry or studied events
  • Age: Under 30 years of age
  • Ethnicity: All races
  • Employement Status: Currently unemployed and not studying
  • Growth mindset: At least 80%
  • Numeracy test: At least 100%
  • Professional communication: 80%
  • Available for interviews: within 2 weeks
  • Available to start: 11 May 2021
  • Stipend: R4500 – R6000

The Action

At the time of the campaign going live, The Knowledge Trust community had grown to almost 295 000 members who were fully engaged and excited about the new WhatsApp application system! – and we had to find a strategy that would help us find the best candidate, in a community of talented and capable members.

The Results

The campaign for the Night Receptionist and Desk concierge  resulted in 17 754 opportunity views for Night Receptionist, 12 944 for front desk concierge. 4 309 qualified applications,  53 shortlisted candidates, 8 interviewed via WhatsApp and 4 lives changed!
